CVN Rediscovered

5.13.03

As some readers of this article may know, Calvin's student organization CVN (the Calvin Video Network), which has been student-driven and student-produced since the late 80s, has had a few weak spots along the years.

With a studio the size of a medium-sized walk in closet, and a student body largely unaware, the small, closed-circuit campus station has found great dificulty in producing and maintaining a steady stream of worth-while programing.

The good news is that this valuable medium of communication is not going to remain untapped for much longer. Already in progress are plans and dedications which certain students are making to turn this tiny station back to the "circuit" airwaves, and to stimulating, dialogical content.

Over the course of the Spring semester 2003, there appeared three new members to CVN, each with a vision of what could be done with the tools at the station. Luke and Jon both being employed by Calvin's professional video production group, CVP (Calvin Video Productions), they already knew much from the start about equipment and

management from following Rob Prince's instruction there. Chad, as well, knew some about equipment, but comes in with a solid artistic background which the group sees as an invaluable edge to the organization.
The trio is aware of the mistakes that have led to the disappointments of CVN in the past and are hopeful in setting up a format that should lead to more stability as well as quality.

So just HOW do we intend to do that?

Leadership

Over the years the organizational structure of CVN has always been to have one General Manager supervising all the work being done and delegating work as necessary. When Jon, Luke, and Chad came together and saw the potential they could have as a team working for one continuous goal, they did not hesitate in submitting the appropriate applications to the student organizations committee and began changing the way business was handled at CVN indefinitely.
Now, when there was a need for big decisions, the three of them could come together and combine their individual skills and arrive at the best possible outcome. In an industry that is so highly competitive and increasingly difficult to get into, this solution prevents inner chaos within the group that would almost naturally ensue with many different voices speaking at once.

Equipment

Second, the then-to-be Seniors are setting up rigid proceedures for equipment check-outs and studio/edit room use. One of the primary problems with CVN in the past has been neglect or disrespect of the equipment (cameras, microphones, tripods, etc). Yet thanks to the recent leadership of Tiffany Leighton, we have much more updated equipment and computers which put us in a very comparable position to others in the video industry, as well as allowing us to use next year's budget on perfecting our setup and tying up loose ends. By simply maintaining and adding to the improvements she and others made with regard to equipment, we stand a much better chance of producing higher quality programing.

Student Dedication

When it comes right down to it, there is a lot the three of us can do for the station to improve it, but without other students sharing in our passion we have little chance of making a long-lasting difference.
We need all underclassmen to know what opportunities are available for them at CVN, and how they can use it as a resource for their future in video or anywhere they go. Join us for fun times and great experience.
