About CVN

What is CVN?

CVN is a student-run, student-oriented TV station for Calvin's campus, airing on channel 4. Started sometime in the late 80's, it has its own studio, control room, and editing facilities in the Commons Annex basement. Programming can include call-in shows, skits, short films, pre-taped live events, music videos, and outside content. CVN also makes a number of services available to the campus as well as to the local community. New leadership and an overhaul of the studio & control room are making CVN an interesting and fun organization to be a part of.

Feeling nostalgic?
CVN has experienced a tumultuous history in its 20-odd-year existence. Read these articles from the Chimes archive to get an idea of what this organization has gone through.

Interested in joining?

It's easy to get involved in CVN. You don't have to be in any particular program, or have taken certain courses. Just show up at our Monday night meetings (9:15 in the Commons Annex basement, sometimes there's pizza) and talk to someone who looks like a leader. Whether you're interested in helping with existing shows or projects, or even starting something of your own, we can always use your talent and enthusiasm. Since CVN is a student-run organization, everything we do is organized and run by students. Where else can you find so many resources with so few strings attached?

What we're up to

Each year, CVN puts together several video shorts for Airband. Ideas come from students like you, so if you have any, now is the perfect time to contact us and get started on it. We also try to have some TV shows going, although the number of shows on the air varies. There's almost always some short film project of some sort going on, and those projects need people to run cameras or sound, do editing, or even act. We host the annual/biannual 25-hour Film Festival, which takes place during advising days. And don't forget our involvement in filming Airband, Dance Guild, and Rangeela - not only do we need people to help set up and run equipment during the show, we also need people to edit that footage into a finished cut afterwards. Don't know how to use the equipment or software? Besides manuals, we have people who are more than happy to pass on their knowledge.

Our mission: CVN aims to be a means for students to react to and shape the subculture in which we live as students by providing access to equipment and a chance to experience learning the language of media. We believe there are voices and personalities around Calvin's campus that are geared for a medium beyond the printed word, and we consider it a worthy goal to provide the resources and know-how for these individuals or groups to play an active role in the evolving dialogue of our community.
